Reason & Emotion, Nazis, Prop 8 and How Do We Make Sense of it All?
I saw this cartoon on a blog that I was reading earlier today, and so many different things about it just absolutely tickled me. This is a US Propaganda cartoon created by Walt Disney Studios in 1943 during WWII. It's quite interesting that the tactics used by Nazi Germany and Hitler seem to mimic those used by the Bush Administration to get us into war in Iraq, they are also frighteningly similar to the tactics used by the proponents of proposition 8.
This video is just rife with so many topics to speak on, including how it teaches the woman to think about her figure and worth, and how the media does little more than sensationalize information to play to our emotions. but I want to talk about the issue of reason and emotion.
I agree that we have gone through a phase of time in which reason has had to dominate our faculties in the making of decisions and values for us as a people, however, I think the time of reason has passed. Reason only works when we are exposed to the unadulterated truth and facts surrounding a situation and given free reign to make decisions off of those. However, that just doesn't happen anymore.
Information is increasing at exponential pace, and the manner in which we derive our information, the media, is for the most part skewed and sensationalized. We are rarely given facts to make a reasonable decision. the United States was presented with facts before the Iraq war, in which we made a reasonable decision to go to war. We later found out that the facts were manipulated and false. Many people who I believe are for equality of all Americans voted to take away rights from thousands of Americans with the voting in of proposition 8 in California. Most made a reasonable decision based of the errant lies, and according to this cartoon, the Nazi-like propaganda attacks from pro 8 organizers. At some point in time, we realize that we cannot rely on reason. Like wise, we know from history, that rampant emotional decisions have their own dire consequences.
Well, I have to say that it's time we humans evolve. When there are no good choices, the only choice is to find something new. The underlying problem with both reason and emotion, is that they do nothing to bring us as a community together. When I say "us", I am speaking of life in every conceivable aspect. I'm not a religious person, I would consider myself spiritual, and barely like that label as it is rot with all kinds of connotation. I believe in the divine of each of us. I believe that if we can tap into that divine thing, some would call love, then we find we are not different. We are the same. Is it possible that a Divine Love and Unity could be the captain of our ships. Is it possible that primal emotions and intellectual reason ride in the back seat to a compassion, and connection with each other? Would that even help to bring us together?
